Freshly laid limestone-toned porcelain patio in a walled garden, rain-washed, with planted raised beds and a white weatherboard house behind

Exterior excellence, from the ground up.

Land & Mortar is a small landscaping studio building gardens, patios, fencing, walls and gates across Brighton & Hove, Rye and London. Designed with care, built by hand, finished to last.

The ground decides everything.

Get the unseen work right and the rest stays right.

Land & Mortar was started in 2018 by Harry Cleary, and it still runs the way it began: one job at a time, done thoroughly. That means honest groundwork before anything pretty goes in. Falls that drain, bases that hold, posts set true.

Then comes the part you get to enjoy: porcelain and natural stone, brick and flint, oak and good timber, planting that softens the lot. We take on everything from small repairs to complete garden rebuilds, and give both the same care.

Rebuilt walled garden: brick and flint retaining wall, stone steps with wrought iron rail, and rain-washed porcelain paving
Featured project

The Walled Garden: stripped to the earth, rebuilt to be lived in.

Old brick walls, tired steps and levels that had given up. We took the whole yard back to the ground, put the drainage in first, rebuilt in brick, flint and oak, then laid limestone-toned porcelain and planted it out.

How we work

What’s under the slabs decides how long they stay flat.

Channel drainage being installed around brick steps before paving
Drainage channelled around the steps and walls before a single slab went down.
Porcelain slabs set out with a string line beside oak sleeper planters
Set out with string lines, cut tight around brick, flint and oak.
Porcelain paving being levelled with red levelling clips in the sun
Every slab bedded and levelled on the clips, then checked again.

Slower, yes. It is also the difference between a patio that stays perfect and one that puddles by its second winter.
